The top 10 stocks account for 36% of the S&P 500, the top 30 for almost half. The market's over-reliance on a few giants is skewing risk-reward dynamics. High valuations, shrinking diversification, and misplaced capital challenge investors to rethink conventional strategies. The margin of safety has shrunk dramatically.
Risk. It is the crucial and unavoidable half of the investment scale. As investors, we are first and foremost risk managers — because the law of large numbers applies.
The first question you should ask yourself with any investment is: what could go wrong? You should always avoid big and obvious risks. And that's exactly the problem with today's market concentration.

Risk management sounds abstract until you understand the concrete arithmetic. The mathematics of losses is asymmetric — the bigger the loss, the exponentially harder the recovery. That's not opinion, it's pure mathematics.
Once you move towards -30%, the problem develops exponentially against you.
That's the reason -30% is the point of no return — mathematically the recovery effort from here is so large that for most portfolios and time horizons it becomes structurally unachievable. The stop-loss discipline of the 12 Sell Rules is at -20% for exactly this reason — before the exponential problem develops.
What does this mean for today's index concentration? The index investor takes a bet on the top 10 with every new capital allocation. If these top 10 — with historically high valuations and inflated expectations — disappoint, losses of 30% and more are realistic. And that's exactly when the brutal recovery mathematics kicks in.
We are approaching a level of market concentration that raises the question whether pure index investing leads to a misallocation of capital — and thus a loss of sufficient diversification. Thierry's argument in three points:
The top names in the index all have common characteristics. At the end of the day, it is a single investment. Technically speaking: an investment in the «size» factor, as passive investors allocate their capital disproportionately to the largest companies. Many market participants have only recently started to flock to this segment because their commitments have been passivated — without noticing.
The majority of the top 10 are technology stocks whose relative returns are positively correlated with bond performance. Consequently, the diversification advantages of balanced portfolios are systematically reduced. The classic 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks, 40% bonds) no longer works as it did in the past — both sides often move in the same direction today.
The rise of Nvidia. A large part of Big Tech's capital expenditure (capex) goes directly to the semiconductor manufacturer for GPUs. Almost half of Nvidia's enormous revenues come from the world's largest companies. This is a closed loop — Big Tech spends capex, Nvidia earns, Nvidia stock rises, Big Tech valuations rise, further capex is justified.
The substantial increase in Big Tech's capex spending is historically exceptional. If Big Tech reduces capex spending — because it takes much longer to bear fruit, or because so much capex is simply not necessary — Nvidia's core driver falls away.
AI investments take time to translate into revenue and earnings. If this transfer doesn't happen quickly enough, Big Tech becomes a capex-intensive business model — historically net-negative for their valuations. Margin expectations would structurally decline.
The semiconductor industry is historically one of the most cyclical. That it will suddenly cease to be cyclical, I strongly doubt. The Nvidia cycle will come — the question is when, not if. And when it comes, Mag-7 valuations fall with it.
The risk-reward relationship is thus out of balance. Buying into this constellation means facing higher risk (higher valuation + greater uncertainty due to less visible and stable returns) and less reward (less upside potential due to high valuation and inflated expectations). The margin of safety is razor-thin. There is no room for disappointment.
When it comes to investing, you also must be a bit of a philosopher. The «Theory of Reflexivity», which George Soros published in 1987 in his book «The Alchemy of Finance», provides the most precise framework to understand what's happening today.
According to Soros' theory, market concentration in indices like the S&P 500 can be viewed as a feedback loop that amplifies price distortions — rather than purely reflecting fundamental values. Reflexivity argues that market participants' biases and perceptions influence both market prices and underlying economic realities. This creates cycles of boom (rising concentration) and bust (falling concentration).
In summary: according to Soros' reflexivity theory, today's concentration of wealth and investment in a small number of stocks leads to a self-reinforcing cycle that drives prices higher in a way that detaches them from fundamentals. The result: increased volatility and the risk of a sharp correction.
Counterpoint Global from Morgan Stanley — headed by Michael J. Mauboussin — has examined «Stock Market Concentration — How Much is too Much» with his typical sharp mind and clean data. The key insight:
The market tends to produce returns above the historical average in periods when concentration is rising — and returns below the average when concentration is falling. The S&P 500's compound annual total return over the full period (1950-2023): 11.4%. The pattern has been consistent for 73 years.
Particularly revealing: the sharp rise in the 1990s and the subsequent correction from 2000 to 2013 — which were extraordinary. This goes hand in hand with the cycles of underperformance (rising concentration) and outperformance (falling concentration) of active fund managers and equally weighted indices respectively — which typically construct portfolios with an average market capitalisation smaller than their benchmarks.
If you invest today in an index with historically high concentration, you are in the final phase of the «returns above average» cycle. The statistical probability of a period with returns below average — in some historical cases 13 years of sideways markets — is high. Not certain, not immediate. But historically likely enough that the allocation question must be seriously asked.
There may not be a definitive limit to the degree of market concentration. But if history is any guide, the risk-reward ratio shifts unfavourably for the market-weighted index holder. On an absolute level (lower future returns) and on a relative level (a much higher potential for larger capitalised companies to underperform smaller companies).
Investors face the daunting task of channeling new funds into an increasingly unattractive market. It is time to rethink your allocation. Four concrete check-points:
1. Actual concentration of your index portfolio. What percent of your total wealth is invested in the top 10 of the major indices? Calculate transparently — many investors are surprised to realise that 35-45% of their «broadly diversified» portfolio sits in 10 stocks.
2. Recovery scenario analysis. What loss would be realistic for your portfolio in a 30% Mag-7 correction? How much recovery would that mean for your total portfolio value? Math doesn't lie — it forces realistic assessment.
3. Correlation reality check. Does your stock/bond mix still deliver real diversification? Or is the positive-correlation world between tech mega-caps and bonds already operating in your portfolio too?
4. Equal-weighted vs. market-cap-weighted index. An alternative to the market-cap-weighted S&P 500 is the equally weighted S&P 500 Equal Weight Index — each of the 500 stocks at 0.2% weight. This structure bypasses the concentration trap. Not as a total solution, but worth considering as an allocation component.
They accept that recovery mathematics is universal — -30% is the point of no return, regardless of how strong the emotional attachment to the lost position. They understand that «index investing» today is a concentrated bet on the top 10, not diversification. They check the Soros reflexivity signals in their own allocation. They know that after the Mauboussin pattern, the «returns above average» phase is historically always followed by the «returns below average» phase — and that this phase can last 10-13 years historically. They follow Templeton's maxim: anyone wanting better performance than the crowd must do things differently from the crowd.
No, this is not a trading recommendation. It's a call for transparency: understand what you hold. Index funds have their merit — low fees, simple implementation, market return. But today's top-10 concentration of 36% is not historically normal. The allocation question must be answered consciously, not on autopilot.
Dollar-cost averaging reduces timing risk, but not the structural concentration risk. If you buy into an S&P-500 ETF every month, you buy more Mag-7 exposure every month — regardless of timing. Dollar-cost averaging smooths entry volatility, but doesn't solve the concentration trap.

Nobody knows. Soros himself would say — imbalances can persist much longer than rationally thought. Mauboussin data shows: historical concentration peaks built up over 5-10 years before the correction came. The question is not «when?» but «am I prepared for both scenarios?».

Anyone who consciously protects the margin of safety — through concentration audit, allocation discipline, quality selection outside the top-10 — builds the structural basis for survival and success in the coming years. Anyone who leaves their margin of safety to the index leaves it to the market-cap dynamics of a few stocks. The choice is personal. The consequences are mathematical.
