This is the home of the arvy screening. If you’ve ever read one of our deep dives and wondered how we decide what’s worth owning — and when — the answer is here. One page, everything you need: the philosophy, the tool, and how to get in.

Why: the Good Story & Good Chart® framework

Everything we do runs through one idea. A great investment needs two things to be true at once — a great business, and a market that agrees. We score every name on both, and only get interested when the two line up.

What makes a Good Story. We hunt for businesses with enduring competitive advantages — the kind built to compound wealth over decades, not quarters:

  • A real moat — a durable competitive advantage that protects returns from competition
  • High returns on invested capital, with robust margins
  • Exceptional management with a track record of smart capital allocation
  • Sustainable organic growth in revenue and earnings
  • A reasonable free-cash-flow valuation and strong FCF generation
  • Low leverage — a balance sheet that survives the bad years
  • A structural tailwind at the company’s back

These are the companies that survive cycles and come out larger.

What makes a Good Chart. Price behaviour reveals what narratives cannot. Great fundamentals mean little if the market disagrees — or if you’re early by several painful years. So we read the tape:

  • Price structure — the shape and health of the trend
  • Accumulation vs. distribution — whether institutions are buying or selling
  • Relative strength — is it leading the market, or lagging it?
  • New highs — strength confirming strength
  • Linearity — a steady, orderly trend rather than a jagged one

The chart confirms whether conviction is real, and it manages your risk when it isn’t.

Good Story & Good Chart® in practice. The philosophy is elegantly simple: buy great businesses, don’t overpay, and hold them as long as the trend works in your favour. We think like long-term investors but act with the risk discipline of traders — adjusting position sizing and exposure as conditions evolve. The goal is straightforward: superior risk-adjusted returns that compound across market cycles.

What: inside the screening

The framework above is applied, continuously, across the entire investable universe — and surfaced through five tools.

1. The full universe — 800+ compounders, searchable and filterable. The heart of it: 800+ of the world’s finest businesses, each scored on both lenses. Filter by sector, subsector, country, currency, or moat width — Wide or Narrow. Sort by Composite, Good Story, or Good Chart. Type a ticker and jump straight to it. Want every Wide-moat name in Industrials trading in EUR with a Composite above 90? Three clicks. This is the difference between reading a list and interrogating one.

2. A whole new dimension — 300+ ETFs. An entire ETF universe, scored on the same framework as the single stocks. Toggle between Stocks and ETFs and the whole engine re-points. Because not every conviction is best expressed through a single name — if the work says a theme is strong but you’d rather own the basket than pick the winner, you can see exactly how the relevant funds score, side by side, on quality and price action.

3. The Sector Heatmap. Because a great business in a weak sector is swimming against the tide — three out of four stocks follow their sector. The heatmap ranks all eleven sectors over time, on both axes (Composite and Good Chart), going back years, in one colour-coded grid. Watch leadership rotate as it happens. Red is weaker, green is stronger, and the story of the whole market is right there in the colours. It’s the context layer behind every name.em Namen.

4. The Story × Chart map. Every subsector plotted on two axes — Good Story across the bottom, Good Chart up the side — with bubble size scaling to how many names sit in each. The top-right quadrant, Leaders, is where we live: strong fundamentals and a strong tape. The bottom-left, Lagging, is where value traps and early-but-wrong ideas cluster. Click any bubble to drill into its constituents. It turns the entire universe into a single picture.

5. “How it works” — the manual. No black box. A full walk-through of exactly what feeds every Good Story score (moat, ROIC, margins, management, FCF valuation, organic growth, low leverage, tailwinds) and every Good Chart score (price structure, accumulation/distribution, relative strength, new highs, linearity). You’ll understand every number you’re looking at.

The live portfolio

Alongside the database sits the part subscribers ask for most: our complete, live portfolio. Exactly what we own, what we don’t, and how we adjust as trends evolve — sitting right next to the engine that generates it. The screening shows you the opportunity set; the portfolio shows you what we actually did about it. We publish a dated snapshot each month, and the holdings live in the subscriber area.
